I have always
enjoyed making letters, probably since first grade where I
learned the alphabet
and to write my name. The interest progressed through
grade school as I noticed the variations
in letterforms that developed among my classmates. I was
in high school when my parents
enrolled me in Art Instruction Schools. I remember the
interviewer pointing out at the time,
people made a living hand lettering headlines for ads and
magazines. This was before
phototypesetters and computers.
Military
service interrupted my studies, but I attended college afterwards
and got my degrees in
Fine Arts and Journalism. One assignment in particular rekindled
my interest in letters: I had tohand letter a word for a series of posters I was making.
It was tedious but my instructor pointed
out I had an aptitude for letter making. My interest
continued from there and I would find myself
constructing letters and words from that point forward.
I'm still at
it and I would welcome the opportunity to make some letters or
words for you.
